We do not guess at your spine. We measure the top of your neck precisely on X-ray, calculate the exact correction your anatomy needs, and deliver it gently with no cracking, popping or twisting.
Why the Upper Neck Matters
The Most Important Two Inches of Your Spine
Upper cervical chiropractic is a specialty within chiropractic that focuses on just two bones: the atlas (C1) and the axis (C2). They sit directly beneath the skull, they carry the full weight of your head, and they are built unlike any other vertebrae. There is no disc between them, they allow more motion than any other joint in the spine, and they surround the brainstem as it becomes the spinal cord.
That combination makes the region both vulnerable and influential. When the atlas shifts out of its normal position, often after a car accident, a fall, a sports collision or years of strain, the head no longer balances squarely on the neck. The body compensates with tilted shoulders, an uneven pelvis and tight muscles, and the joints around the brainstem send a constant stream of distorted signals.
Most chiropractors adjust the whole spine. Upper cervical chiropractors concentrate on this one region and correct it with unusual precision, because a small, accurate change at the top of the neck can let the rest of the spine and the nervous system settle back toward balance. It is a narrow focus by design.

Orthospinology
How We Correct the Atlas and Axis
Orthospinology is one of the precision upper cervical procedures, alongside methods such as NUCCA and Atlas Orthogonal. It grew out of the work of Dr. John F. Grostic, who began developing X-ray based upper cervical analysis in the late 1930s and taught his first seminar in 1946. A group of doctors formalized Orthospinology in 1977, adding instrument adjusting to the original hand correction.
Before any correction, we take a specific series of upper cervical X-rays and measure how your skull, atlas and axis relate to each other in all three dimensions. From those measurements we calculate the direction and angle of the correction your misalignment needs. No two patients receive exactly the same adjustment, because no two patients have exactly the same anatomy.
The correction is delivered while you lie comfortably on your side. A precision instrument sends a single, light pulse along the calculated angle. There is no twisting of the neck and no popping sound. Afterward you rest for a few minutes, and we recheck your measurements to confirm the correction held. On follow-up visits we only adjust if the measurements show your atlas has shifted again.
What Makes This Different
- •Correction calculated from three precise X-ray views
- •Tailored to your individual anatomy
- •No forceful twisting, cracking or popping
- •Objective pre- and post-correction measurements
- •Adjusted only when the spine needs it, not on a fixed schedule
- •Gentle enough for children, pregnant patients and seniors
The Instrument We Use
KH-2 Laney Adjusting Instrument
Backed by more than 45 years of research, the KH-2 Laney delivers a precise, instant-fire electronic pulse for atlas corrections. Force (0–5 lbs.) and stylus travel are adjustable with a single knob, and a built-in inclinometer allows exact positioning before every correction, so there's no guesswork, just a measured, repeatable adjustment. It is used only by chiropractors trained in instrument adjusting through accredited Orthospinology programs and seminars.
Not every patient needs upper cervical care, but every patient deserves to know whether they do. Our comprehensive examination, objective testing and digital imaging show whether an upper cervical misalignment is contributing to your symptoms. If you are not a candidate, we will tell you.
Serving
The X-Ray Analysis
Measured, Not Guessed
The precision of Orthospinology comes from its imaging. Standard neck X-rays show whether bones are healthy. Our upper cervical series is taken with specific positioning so we can measure alignment to fractions of a degree. Three views work together to show the full three-dimensional picture.
The side view shows how the atlas tilts forward or backward and how the head sits over the neck. The front view, called the nasium view, shows side-to-side shifting and how the atlas sits under the skull. The top-down vertex view shows rotation. Combined, they reveal the exact direction your atlas has moved, which becomes the correction we deliver.
Research on the reliability of this X-ray analysis has found that key measurements, including atlas laterality and the position of the axis, can be reproduced very consistently between examiners. After your initial corrections, we take a post-correction view to confirm the atlas moved the way we intended. That verification step is what sets precision upper cervical care apart.
What Each X-Ray View Shows
- •Lateral (side) view: forward or backward tilt of the atlas and head posture
- •Nasium (front) view: side-to-side shift of the atlas under the skull
- •Vertex (top-down) view: rotation of the atlas
- •Post-correction view: confirms the correction achieved its goal
- •Taken only when clinically warranted, with modern low-dose digital equipment
Experience the Difference
Upper Cervical Care vs. Traditional Chiropractic
Traditional chiropractic usually adjusts several areas of the spine at each visit, often by hand with a quick thrust that produces the familiar pop. It helps many people, and it is a valid approach. Upper cervical care is different in focus, method and rhythm.
Instead of adjusting the same areas every visit, we correct one precise location and then measure whether it holds. As the correction stabilizes, you need fewer visits, not more. Many patients who did not tolerate manual neck adjustments, or who felt better only for a day or two, find this approach suits them.
Key Differences
- •One precise correction instead of many general adjustments
- •Calculated from X-ray measurements rather than feel alone
- •Instrument-delivered with light force, no rotation of the neck
- •Visits are based on whether the correction is holding
- •Progress tracked with objective, repeatable measurements
- •Focused on the region that influences posture and the brainstem
What the Research Says
An Honest Look at the Evidence
We believe in telling patients exactly where the science stands. Upper cervical research is growing, but much of it consists of small studies and case series, and larger controlled trials are still needed. Here are some of the studies we find most relevant.
In a 2007 placebo-controlled pilot study published in the Journal of Human Hypertension, 50 patients with early-stage high blood pressure received either a precise atlas correction or a sham procedure. After eight weeks, blood pressure dropped significantly more in the corrected group. In a 2015 pilot study of 11 migraine patients, headache days decreased and quality of life improved after eight weeks of atlas correction, though there was no control group. A 2019 case series of six post-concussion patients reported improvement across several measures after twelve weeks of low-force upper cervical care.
None of these studies prove that upper cervical care will help every person with these conditions. What they show is a consistent signal worth taking seriously, a very favorable safety profile for gentle procedures, and a good reason to evaluate the upper neck when other approaches have not resolved your symptoms.
Holding Your Correction
Why We Measure Success by How Long You Hold
The goal of upper cervical care is not to adjust you often. It is to correct the atlas and then let your body stabilize around that correction. The longer a correction holds, the more time muscles, ligaments and the nervous system have to adapt to the new position.
Early in care, we usually check you more frequently while the correction is settling. As it holds longer, visits spread out. Many long-term patients come in for periodic checkups and are adjusted only when their measurements show a shift. Daily habits make a real difference in how well corrections hold.
Habits That Help Corrections Hold
- •Sleep on your back or side with a supportive pillow, not on your stomach
- •Bring phones and screens up to eye level
- •Avoid cracking or popping your own neck
- •Ease back into heavy lifting, contact sports and roller coasters
- •Stay hydrated and keep active with walking and gentle exercise
- •Let us know right away about any new fall or accident
What to Expect
Your First Visit and Beyond
Your first visit begins with a complimentary consultation. We listen to your full health history, not just your main complaint: when it started, what makes it better or worse, and any injuries or accidents in your past. These details matter enormously in upper cervical care.
Next comes a comprehensive examination with neurological and postural testing and thermal imaging, and upper cervical X-rays when they are clinically warranted. You will not be adjusted until we have analyzed your films. At a separate recommendation visit, we walk you through what we found, what it means and what we recommend, with no pressure.
We are a private-pay practice, which means longer visits with the doctor and a care plan built around your needs rather than an insurance formula. We provide detailed superbills so you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement.
