What Is Actually Happening Inside the Disc
Spinal discs sit between each vertebra and act as shock absorbers. They have a tough outer shell called the annulus fibrosus and a gel-like interior called the nucleus pulposus. A herniation occurs when that outer shell develops a crack or tear and the inner material pushes through, often pressing against nearby nerve roots.
Here is something that does not get talked about enough: MRI studies have found that roughly 37 percent of people who have a disc herniation on imaging have no pain at all. This tells us that the pain is not simply about the herniation itself but about how much inflammation and nerve irritation is present around it.
The other important point is that discs do heal. Not back to their original state, but the herniated material can retract, inflammation can resolve, and normal function can return. Chiropractic care creates the conditions for that process to happen faster and more completely.

Decompression, Adjustments, and Laser Therapy
For disc herniations, we typically combine three tools: spinal decompression to create negative intradiscal pressure and draw the herniated material back toward center, chiropractic adjustments to restore normal joint motion and reduce the compensatory load on the damaged disc, and Class IV laser therapy to reduce inflammation around the affected nerve root and accelerate tissue healing.
This combination is significantly more effective than any one of these tools alone, and for most patients it produces results in 6 to 12 weeks that would otherwise take much longer or require surgical intervention.
