Double Crush Syndrome and the Cervical Connection
True carpal tunnel syndrome involves compression of the median nerve at the wrist. But there is a well-documented phenomenon called double crush syndrome, where a nerve that is compressed at one point along its path becomes hypersensitive to compression at other points. In plain language: if the nerve roots at C5, C6, or C7 are being irritated by a cervical misalignment, the same nerve is much more likely to become symptomatic at the wrist too.
This is why many patients who have carpal tunnel surgery do not get full relief. The wrist compression is corrected, but the cervical component is still there. We evaluate both the wrist and the cervical spine, and in many cases, correcting the cervical spine significantly reduces or eliminates the carpal tunnel symptoms before we ever need to address the wrist directly.

Our approach for carpal tunnel combines cervical adjustments, direct wrist mobilization, soft tissue work to the forearm flexors, and laser therapy to reduce inflammation around the median nerve at the carpal tunnel. Most patients see improvement within a few weeks.
Surgery for carpal tunnel has a reasonable success rate, but recovery is significant and the cervical component will not be addressed. We always recommend exhausting conservative care first.
If you have significant muscle wasting at the base of your thumb or progressive weakness in the hand, that indicates more advanced nerve damage and we will expedite your evaluation and treatment accordingly.
