Honest Information About Scoliosis
Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine. Most cases are idiopathic, meaning there is no known cause. It typically develops during childhood growth spurts and affects girls more often than boys, though anyone can have it.
The severity is measured by the Cobb angle on X-ray. Curves under 20 degrees are monitored. Curves between 20 and 40 degrees may need bracing during adolescent growth. Curves over 40 degrees typically warrant a surgical consultation. Most patients fall in the mild to moderate range and do very well with conservative management.
Chiropractic care does not straighten a structural scoliotic curve. But it absolutely reduces the pain, improves mobility in restricted segments, addresses the muscle imbalances that develop around the curve, and in some research, slows progression in adolescents.
