The nerves that control and sense your arms originate in the cervical spine. The nerves for your legs come from the lumbar spine and sacrum. When a disc herniates, a joint misaligns, or bone spurs form at any of those exit points, the nerves passing through get compressed or irritated, and you feel it downstream in your extremities.

This is called radiculopathy, and it is far more common than most people realize. Patients come in with arm pain, weakness, or tingling that has been attributed to everything from carpal tunnel to rotator cuff problems, when in fact the compression is at a cervical nerve root.

We use a combination of orthopedic tests, neurological examination, and when indicated, specific X-rays or referral for MRI to identify exactly where the nerve compression is occurring. From there, the treatment targets that location directly.

Most extremity pain from spinal nerve compression responds very well to chiropractic adjustments, often combined with decompression and laser therapy. The key is making sure we are treating the right level.
